Latest Mobile Communications Technologies

From the heavy cordless phones of the 1980's to the smart phones of today, cellular phone technology has undergone a incredible change. But have you ever wondered how you can call to your well wisher in the whole world with the usage of a mobile phone? You also have knowledge about the main features such as WAP and GPRS from the cell phone vendors and service providers. But you must aware of what they really mean?

There are numerous mobile technologies. So next time, when you are going to purchase a phone, you should know what technologies it has.

Generations of mobile communications

In the late 1970s, the first generation (1G) of mobile communications was introduced; it was primarily used for voice transfer. Second generation (2G) systems came into existence in the early 1990s and was further developed to 2.5G, which includes high technologies such as TDMA, GSM and CDMA. These technologies were used for voice and data.

The next generation of mobile communications is 3G which delivers data speeds from 384 kbps to 2 Mbps and over wireless interfaces such as GSM, TDMA and CDMA.

Mobile phone access technologies

Frequency division multiple access (FDMA)

The first-generation analog mobile access method; for each call, FDMA uses separate frequencies. For instance, if there are four stations, each will receive their own frequency. So there is no interference between them. It reduces interference, but limits the number of users.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
what can you say about Video Games in the Operating Room
The latest wave of video game technology is doing much more than keeping teenagers entertained … it's preparing doctors for the operating room.
Surgical resident Jeff Henke is playing games … in hopes of becoming a better surgeon.
"This isn't exactly what I pictured when I thought of medical school."
Those control sticks on the Nintendo wii are actually probes … the same kind he'll use in the operating room.
"This does really help. It kind of coordinates your hand movements, gets you prepared to go into the operating room and perform laparoscopic surgery."
Doctors had to make a few adjustments to turn the wii accessories into surgical tools.
"We took the golf club out and actually put this -- a laparoscopic probe -- on it."
Using these cyber gloves to record and measure hand movements, bioinformatics expert Doctor Kanav Kahol made a discovery … the coordination used to play the games is similar to what's needed in laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery.

Simulators that train doctors for surgery often cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, but a pilot study at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix found playing the specially adapted wii, residents skills improved by 50-percent.
"This gives us a much less costly way to train on these fine motor skills that the surgeons employ in surgery."
Co-Developer Doctor Mark Smith says wii has taken training to a whole new level.
"They develop an increased efficiency, less errors, more fluid movement. basically, they're just better."
Jeff knows there's no restart button in real surgery, but for now he's sharpening his skills one game at a time.

Researchers say these computer games could give surgeons a way to improve their skills at home, and could even provide surgeons in third world countries a less expensive way to become more proficient.

  2. QUESTION:
Do you think the NHL is behind the times for the latest technology wtih video replays being such a key factor!
Not just with the recent no goal call in the Sabres, Rangers game but many a times they always come up with a inconclusive decision. You would think with todays High Def and High speed cameras that this would no longer be an issue.

    • ANSWER:
the problem is the rules, not the tech. they assume the ref was in a good position to see the play, so if there's no conclusive evidence to overturn the call (Which may be a no goal since the refs are human)

the standared is that the call made on the ice is right except for when there is overwhelming evidence- beyond a doubt.

Bad idea. That was a goal.

Edit: to the person who said it was an awful idea, let me clarifiy a little. If the puck is visible (not under the goalie or anything like that) and the coach asks for a review, assume the puck went in (If you can see it, like in the buffalo game) unless there is conclusive proof that it did not go in. so in that situation you describe, the ref whistling it dead would come into play. If the puck is in the net before the play is whistled dead, it's a gaol. period. That's the definition. So, If it was covered up, the play would be dead anyway, and no goal would be scored. It still works.

And cameras in the crossbars. Gets rid of the need for all the padding they have on them now, it's encased by metal. and you don't have any doubt because of blind spots.

The standard needs to be that it is assumed a goal in all cases unless there is enough evidence to say for certain that it isn't. It takes away the ref completely from the call and removes much of the human element. It goes in or not. Not the ref didn't call it the first time and the pad hid the puck form the camera.

The NHL needs to reveiw how they do video reviews.

    • ANSWER:
It's all dependant on what your hardware is at the moment.

I am guessing your RAM is DDR400, meaning you can pick up a couple of Gig for about £20. That isn't fantastic, but it'd live with 'most' things.

Graphics depends on whether your motherboard supports AGP cards or PCI-E cards. AGP cards are no longer made as they are outdated, thus can be pricey to replace.
You can tell which kind of card you can use by the colour of the expansion slot, if it's sat in a brown slot, it's AGP. If it's white or black, it's PCI.

I believe that most, if not all, 6 series GeForce are PCI, but not 100% sure.

The main problem is your processor. To increase your processor to what's needed now, you'd need a new motherboard. This is where it does get tricky. If you don't know how to put it all together, you'll either damage the parts, or it won't work.

So, I would say, if you know how to assemble a pc, buy the parts necessary. You could cut about 40+% off buying a brand new pc. But, either way, expect to at least pay a couple of hundred quid to get a decent enough system, even then that won't play games at the higher settings.

My current system is as follows for main parts:

Intel Pentium Q6600 CPU, clocked to 3.29 GHz (total of 13.16 GHz of CPU power)
      4GB Corsair DDR2 800 RAM
      Asus GeForce 9800 GX2

The system needs about 6 120mm fans and 1 200mm fan to keep it cool, not including the arctic cooler the size of my fist solely for the cpu =. It sounds like an aircraft when it's running, but it works fine on most systems.

You want to look for a graphics card at least in the 8-9 series, aim for about 4GB of ram (DDR2 if buying a new board) and at least a 2GHz dual core CPU.

On top of this, aim to spend about 10% of the hardware price on a case, this usually gives it adequate cooling etc.

I think that's most of it, if you need any extra help, let me know.

    • ANSWER:
It's extremely rare to see master's course which specializes on game in Japan. More than 95% of conventional universities do not have that kind of course.

But the below one, Tohoku University of Art and Design has Sendai School which is focusing on game designing.

      http://conpro.jp/en/

Please keep in mind that master's degree is generally not appreciated in Japanese society. It's appreciated in some fields. But I don't think that's the case in gaming industry.

If you can, it's better to directly find a job in game industry in Japan.

  8. QUESTION:
What will be the future of two-dimensional animation or 2D, in the animated film and video game arcade?
The 2D animation in recent times has achieved remarkable progress to merge with 3D animation. The computer has facilitated significant progress when it seemed to have reached an impasse. The spectacular achieved in films like Titan AE, Castle Ambulante, Treasure Planet, The Road toElDorado, Sinbad, or Spirit, to mention some of them, a few years ago was unthinkable.
Some think that, somehow, traditional animation has already begun to die, because although drawings continue 2D drawings, with the support 3D technology is becoming larger. But surely continue for long.
Although since July 2003, have not developed new films 2D animation in the U.S. after Spirit, Treasure Planet, Titan A. E., While in Asia, and especially the Japanese animation, things are very different. The computer is completing entering, while in the West already had in the 1980's movies that use the computer, like Basil mouse super detective Disney of 86, where his final scene, while Big Ben, the elements mechanics are 3D computer. In Asia, only after completing the second half of 1990, begins to make its appearance and timidly, Princess Mononoke, Hayao Miyazaqui and Los Ghibli animation studios, has only 15 minutes where the computer makes its appearance. Currently, has undergone a major expansion, but adapted to the rigid production processes in place of cel shading, but not 3D, as in Spirited Away My neighbors or those Yamada, fully digital, despite being 2D.
In other cases, the computer takes over the mechanical elements, funds and colored, blending with traditional 2D characters, as in the series which follow the established aesthetic in Blue Submarine No. 6, whose nearest example could be reached Spain Sol Bianca . Even the 3D, pure and simple, this introduced by Japan.
Does the evolution of the traditional 2d animation, which now develop hybrid 2D/3D movies, will lead to 3D digital animation films that succeed in giving a 3D animation finished 2D, as the upcoming "Rapunzel" and "Up!" Disney to develop, and this with Pixar, and that seem animated watercolors?
In Dreamworks on the contrary everything you make from 2009 will be in 3D, supported by technical and stereoscopic not be new animated films such as hybrid Spirit, Sinbad or anything like that (if indeed someone was waiting for him), due to closure 2D its division by the failure of the animated film Sinbad.
The explosion of novelty, the 3D potential and has come to stay. There will be a fad, but over time, the 2D return covered at the end of the boom and nostalgia at the time.
Or rather, as stated the web Dreamers, over time, the waters again on track, and different types of animation including coexist and complement, and animation will open up new avenues.

In video game arcades like something is happening,
Games like "Rumble Fish" and "Bttle Fantasy", were designed by the same people who revolutionized sprites, with the drawn Hi - Re, Apartado 1998 with the arcade "Guilty Gear", with works like "Fist of Northern Star" . Sammy and Dimps have worked some more arcades, with drawn sprites, before concentrating its work on the estates and drawn with Cell Shading. Even knew that sooner or later sprites or 2D bitmaps, as elements of drawing, would be dead.
Capcom has become Street Fighter game in a hybrid between 2D and 3D gaming, in its fourth issue, with polygonal graphics and cell shading, because according to them "sprites in high definition involve an impossible job." Street Fighter IV has impacted, but still fall far short of what we achieved today sprites or 2D bitmaps…
It has developed long ago, polygonal graphics of single plane or scroll motion, and we have seen interesting things like: Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Söldner-X: Himmelsstürmer, Ultimate Ghosts' N Goblins, Naruto Ultimate Ninja 2, Bionic Commando rearmament , Raiden III, or Battle Fantasia, that inspired designers Street Fighter IV

While it is true, do not achieve quality graphics, which now gets a good design or bitmaps 2D sprites, because it takes a few polygons and textures worked to achieve very beautiful graphics, which often is not achieved, getting only photo realism. Cell-shading, not today equates to a drawing plane, because however much they place the camera in a single plane side, is complicated polygonal disguise the origin of the characters, or objects that make up the different scenarios of arcades, On the other pate , A game in fact you do not need the 3d animation Fluid in the arcades that get drawn sprites with Al 2D or 3D bitmaps still lacks naturalness. Although it is expected to be improved technically and ending finished giving a more artistic.
Some sites, such as forums and EOL Gamercafe, speculate on the possibility that, when Cell Shading improved significantly more in the future, for polygonal graphics in real time, who knows if you can emulate a chart or 2D sprites bitmaps, or even get to overcome if it is worth.

What do Vdes. on this whole issue of traditional animated films and video games of sprites or 2D bitmaps? I suppose that both will go hand in hand, aunuqe do not know if the game industry is moving behind the animated film being an industry where less and less invested in their development and innovation.

    • ANSWER:
Wow, that was a long description. I'm afraid that I won't be able to post as such compared to yours and yet here I am, typing. I think that you have already answered your own question, maybe you want someone to clarify or uphold your belief? Well, here I am. I don't know what to say yet, but let me be spontaneous.

I had [have rather...as I still play most of them] some games with 2d like Melty Blood, Arcana Heart, Metal Slug, Street Fighter, Sonic and like what you have mentioned, Rumble Fish [which has nothing to do with fishes at all!]. For their graphics and appearance likewise, I'd look at it but only secondly to its plot or storyline. The plot is more important, and the playability! Let's say Metal Slug for example, despite its 2d-ness, people liked it for its game style and infinite ammo. It will be a classic, an epic. Times are moving fast, I'm not a fortune teller so I would not be able to tell whether the people in our society will forget about these things. Maybe yes, maybe no. I for one will not, I bet on it.

So yes, it's past millennium, it's 2008, and some people are greedy or are in need of money. I guess that is the reason why companies try to get in with the modern world and follow its pleas of new things and much more "pleasant" outcomes. Despite of how much people liked their 2d, they would still have to earn money and continue forth. Try asking some eleven year olds or somehow any much younger ones, they probably wouldn't know what or who Sonic is! [for an example only].

Either way, 2d may never be forgotten. It may have a comeback or clash in combination with 3d [like what you said] but it could also perish...and we may never see it again, but I doubt it.

We'll see it again. I'm hopeful of seeing much of it again in the future. ;D

  9. QUESTION:
Does communism advance technology for important things while capitalism only advances it for pop culture?
If there were to societies that are completely isolated from one another and one was communist and the other was capitalist would the way their technology advance be completely different. For example, the communist country wouldn't have the latest ipods or video games. However as a whole, their society would already be exploring other planets. Capitalism is the opposite. Technology only advances on the entertainment demands of the masses. In communism, the central planners are creating the demand that will advance the country as a whole. We witness this in the space race. The Soviet Union was already ahead in putting a human in space while the United States was busy making televisions and movies. The United States thus only went to space to compete against the Soviet Union, and not for ideological motives.
here is an example of a good form of communism

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzqW0YaN2ho

    • ANSWER:
A lighter answer to your question is the old story (possibly a myth) from the days of the space race.

"The US wanted a pen that would work in space, it would work upside down, underwater, in the freezing cold and in the boiling heat. After many years and thousands of dollars they succeeded in making a pen that did just that.

The Russians spent 50 cents and used a pencil."

Oh and on amore serious note, whoever thinks the US 'won' the space race is kidding themselves. That's like saying because you win one gold medal you've won the Olympics. The only US first was a man on the moon. Pretty much all the other 'space' firsts were Russian.

Mind you it's all a moot point since what really happened is that the Germans captured by the USSR were racing against the Germans captured by the USA.

  10. QUESTION:
could you be friends with someone who doesn't own the latest technology?
I know it sounds odd but I get funny looks from people when they find out I don't have an Ipod, a bu ray player, a PS3, etc. I'm just not a tech person, I don't even know what a smart phone is. I enjoy things like being outside, playing guitar (yes I can actually play a real guitar, not the video game one kids are playing) and just trying to enjoy life. I don't usually worry if I'm up to date enough to impress people but people are getting pretty bad about it now. People get more materialistic every year.

    • ANSWER:
Yeah who the hell cares about that shit? Something new will come out later and then that stuff is old. Dont worry about it there are many people out there who have your kind of interests. Make friends with people like that. You know people who dont always talk about technology. I dont really like it myself too much its complicated.

Journalism major and marketing minor / video game industry?
I am going to be changing my major in college from business administration to journalism and a minor in marketing. The thing is I love video games. I grew up on the SNES and Super Mario Bros. I have always had the newest systems and just love all the technology surrounding them. Now on to my question.
With a major in journalism and a minor in marketing is it possible for me to jump into the video game industry such as reviewing games and or getting the latest news on upcoming games from events like E3 and other gaming expos?

Any advice from Journalist and people in the gaming industry would be well appreciated. Thanks for answers ahead of time.

PS I also love technology in general. Computers are cool and I spend about 3 days outta the week tweaking and upgrading computers. SO a career in general tech. would be awesome as well... I just love games more haha.

    • ANSWER:
I hate to be the first to tell you but good luck. Journalism is a tough career field-- there is so much competition. Make sure if you do major in Journalism do an internship. I am so pissed I didn't do that in college. Everyone I know that was a journalism major, that didn't intern--currently don't have a job.

I was looking into the gaming industry and I have to admit those jobs are slim to none. I'm not gonna say it's not possible. Intern Intern Intern and that will open doors to many opportunities.

  13. QUESTION:
Am I supposed to turn the other cheek when it comes to the way my boyfriend raises his kids?
My boyfriend is 10 years older than I am, with 3 kids (boys age 13, and 16 year old twins). I have no kids, nor have I ever dated anyone with kids. We've been seeing each other for a year now, and there are things about the way he runs his house-hold that REALLY bother me.

First of all, for clarification, the 13 year old lives with him and the twins are there every other weekend.

The main annoyance for me is that he does not set a limit on their computer time. They play the popular game, WOW, non-stop. It starts for the 13 year old when he gets home from school. They don't eat family dinner together, so he will eat dinner while playing. He will continue until 10PM...his curfew for bed. On the weekends, he will play ALL day long and into the night until he is tired and feels like going to bed. Same goes for the twins when they come over. This REALLY bothers me and I say stuff to my boyfriend about it all the time to the point that it is a real touchy subject with us and we will immediately launch into an argument. He says it is not my place, and that I should be concerned about him, not his kids. He says I am there to visit him, not them. I try to turn the other cheek, but for a YEAR now, EVERY single time I come over....I pull into his driveway, and am faced with his son's window, where I can see his little head glued to that monitor. The younger one also has one of the best cell phones on the market and while playing his video games, while out to eat, and in the car, he's constantly texting his friend back and forth. I find it RUDE and if it were up to me, I would limit it him on that, also.

I would like to mention that the 13 year old is inolved in band at school and makes good grades. He has a great disposition. He seems a little withdrawn sometimes...but once you start asking him questions, he comes out of his shell. I really don't know what the normal behavior is supposed to be. The twins are not involved in anything extra-curricular.....they are special needs, but you really can't tell at first. They are really sweet, but are mostly raised by their mom, with whom my boyfriend does not get along with at all.

Other things that bother me are the fact that they never sit down to eat together. Also he spends hundreds of dollars to keep them all stocked with the latest in technology...the flat screen TV's, huge computers, and all the latest video game consoles that are out there, along with all the latest games offered. Yet he has NO nice furniture and lets his yard go and the house is always junky and dirty. I know I am a woman.....but the house is like a dormatory to me. That can't be healthy...or am I being picky??

I don't know what is right and wrong. I don't have kids. So am I the bad guy here? And so I know who I am dealing with....is my boyfriend a bad father? Or is this stuff perfectly normal, and I am being ignorant? Because I would really like to be a good girlfriend...so if it is my place to step back and 'shut up' then please, tell me!

One thing I have considered is telling my boyfriend that we will need to wait on moving in together until the kids are older and out of the house, since our views are so different. ( We talk about moving in together and/or getting married one day) I also feel like if we combine our incomes...I will be completely against buying things/helping his kids out with things unless they are living a lifestyle that I agree with, or unless I know exactly what they are going to spend it on. I will not contribute to a college student's video game addiction or beer money, especially some kid I previously was to 'have nothing to do with'...but if the kid(s) were being productive members of society...sure, I would love to buy food to stock their kitchen with....help with a bill here and there....thoughts?

    • ANSWER:
The only thing you can do is talk to your boyfriend about how you feel, but you may be opening up the door to pandora's box here. No parent wants to be told how to raise their kids, especially from a "girlfriend"

If you dont agree with things now, then I would suggest getting out before you get your feelings hurt. These are his kids and obviously he is gonna raise them how he sees fit.

there are 2 major factors that cause problems in a marriage and that is money and kids. I am married and it bothers me sometimes that my husband tells me how to handle some situations, and we have been together for 17 years.

I would say keep it to yourself..... bite the bullet or get out now

  15. QUESTION:
Want To Know If I Can Upgrade Or Rebuild My Compaq Presario 5000?
I recently bought a very old Compaq Presario 5000 for and wanted to know if the system could be retooled/rebuilt in order to create a feasible setup.

From other Q+A's I have read this morning, it sounds like the system cannot be built into something that can handle the latest and greatest in video game technology (I really didn't expect it to be so great, but still curious if it has any value for me).

If I have to I can take the time to rebuild it from almost scratch if that is necessary, but I would really hate it if I ended up spending so much money on nothing.

Thank You For Your Time. Have A Great Day. Good Luck.

  17. QUESTION:
what should I write for the ending of my speech?
As time has passed during the centuries there has now come a time when children have started becoming more inclined towards gaming then anything else. You may think game addiction is not a serious problem, but it can destroy peoples lives. This addiction has lead to loss of jobs, relationships and has even broken apart families. When you and your friends were playing video games and is always wanting to play the newest games. Have you ever thought of this as a disease or addiction?
There are many symptoms when you may or may not have a game addiction. For example “Lack of control”, If you were unable to control the time you have on a computer or any Gaming device and spends 15 to 20 minutes, but always extends the time to several hours. Negative Impact on Other areas of life, If you spend a large amount of time on a computer or video game console and you are constantly spending the amount of time each day. You will begin to not be aware of your distant between your family and friends, Homework may go unfinished, causing grades to slip. In other serious situation, some teens, for example may choose video games rather then taking a shower. The most important signs you see from a friend, family member, or yourself with a game addiction is if when you start playing a game and are happy most of the time, until you are no longer allowed to play and eventually have to stop, you begin to be angry or upset. If you ever kept thinking about going online or playing when you are suppose to be focusing on more important situations. Or when you spend more time on your computer or video game controller, then spending time with your friends. These warning signs will provide your parents, friends, and other family member to look for if they are concerned about someone’s use of video, computer, or internet games.
As technology moves forward, so does graphic violent nature of the video games. Violent games are most addictive and cause the most issues, then any other kind of game. This is one of the biggest problems because out of the most school shootings in recent years have been most gamers causing the shooting, There choice of games were dark and violent. In 1980 they released sony PlayStation, and thats when violence became an issue and threw the years while the graphics became lifelike, the more violent games, the more violent behavior. In order to win in violent games you have to be the aggressor. So rather then watching the violence on television, its like committing the violent acts. Most researchers acknowledge that this kind of active participation affects a person's thought patterns, at least in the short term. Another factor that concerns both researchers and parents is that violence in video games is often rewarded rather than punished. In army and sniper games, players "level up" based in part on how many people they kill. If played frequently enough, games like this can skew a young person's perception of violence and its consequences. Parents should realize the amount of time their children spend gaming and watch closely for any negative effects.
Video games are designed to be addictive, most designers make the game challenging, which allow players to achieve small accomplishments to keep playing. Its like gambling which will allow players to have small "wins” that keep them playing. There are several hook’s that make a game addictive. For example High scores, whether trying out the latest edition of Grand Theft Auto or haven’t played a game since Pac-Man, The high score is the most popular hook. When trying to beat the high score it can keep a player playing for hours. Beating the game is another hook, this makes most people play for days. Role playing, allow players to do more than just play they get to actually create the characters in the game and go on an adventure that's somewhat unique to that character. Consequently, there's an emotional attachment to the character, and the story makes it much harder to stop playing. Most people like to spend there spare time playing games, while others there friends, family, school, and even personal hygiene are neglected as nearly every spare moment is spent playing games.

so yeah thats my speech, what do I write for the ending?

    • ANSWER:
I really don't know all i know is that you hit some key problems but some were kinda off, yeah some teens cant control there play time but most can, some do spend hours on end playing but most don't and yes games like grand theft auto 4 have drug, sex, and violence but its the parents job to control that not society, and when you say that people are rewarded by killing to level up, well people aren't as obsessed about leveling up as you think they are. the awards aren't like the nicotine tobacco companies add to "stay hooked". and if you think that online gaming all about "killing the enemy" its not.i take it more as a kinda paintball game mentality. this is what i say after every game"good game yall" of course it doesn't always go like that but thats how the real players should do it. honestly the foul language is probably the biggest problem and thats why online games should be for kids about 13 and over. and the last thing, the school shootings that have been happening is mostly because teens are able to get there hands on a gun that is the parents fault, you could say that video games teach kids/teens how to accurately handle and shoot a gun but really, thats not the problem they could find that out without video games (most don't know even with video games), the problem is that they could get ahold of one.

if you writhing this for a school project or something then go ahead get a 100 but if this is for a meeting or something i really don't think its an accurate display of reality.

will i be able to play the latest games with this pc?
its a dell Inspiron 530,Intel Core2 Duo processor E6420 (2.13GHz 1066FSB) w/Dual Core Technology and 4MB cache, it has a 2gb of ram, and a 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT- DDR3 video card. will it play the latest games at a good frame rate and at a good quality?

    • ANSWER:
I dont think so. I believe you need a better graphics card. I think the 8800s are the only ones that will run DX10 games. Or the 2900 ati's, I dont know why. I was going to get an 8600 and someone warned me not to cause of this reason. I told him it said DX10 compatible, but he said only the 8800s are barely powerful enough to run a DX10 game.

Your card will play all other games, but the next generation I believe you will need to upgrade to an 8800 gtx 320, or 640, something a little more powerful then what you currently have.

      Hope this helps!

  20. QUESTION:
Do guys like girls if she doesn't play video games?
I don't mind watching guys play videogames or hanging out with the guys every now 'n then. But I'm not really a gamer. I also don't like to watch sports, but I find playing or participating in them a lot more fun. I'm kind of a girly-girl but not so much that I dress very girly, or hate to get my hands dirty if I need to, and I actually think shopping is kind of boring.

I think I'm a pretty low-maintenance person though that I don't get bored easily and don't complain about what my friends want to do (if they want to watch tv, go to the mall, or play games). Materials and the latest technology that everyone wants doesn't really matter to me just as long as I have the basic apps.

    Would guys still date me?

  21. QUESTION:
List of parts to build a home computer (non-gaming), fast and good quality, high end?
I want quality, best brands and a lot of speed and memory space, latest technology, enough to just do word, exel, utube videos, surfing the web, store music, pictures, and videos. No games. And do I need a video card or graphics card? Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
If you aren't gaming you don't need a standalone graphics card. The newer integrated graphics on Intel's Sandy bridge Core i3/i5 processors are good enough for everyday use and watching movies. And the the built-in graphics on AMD's new Llano processors are even better.
      http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/intel-hd-graphics-2000-3000_9.html#sect0

For what you've described, the AMD A8-3850 processor offers the best bang/buck. Although if you're being "brand conscious" you may prefer sticking with Intel and getting the faster Core i3 2100. You don't need processors like the Core i5 2400 and 2500 for everyday work, although they are higher-performance (and more expensive). But for Word, Excel, Youtube videos, and Music there's no point buying a 0 processor when a 5 processor does that stuff just as well, except perhaps to make your system more future-proof.

So i recommend one of these (depending upon your budget):

  22. QUESTION:
Is the newest technology ruining future, and the latest, generations?
There's no need to buy CDs or games when you can download them, illegally or legally.
The internet and text messages are becoming stand-ins for face-to-face social contact.
Video games, TV, etc are replacing the need to exercise.
You can buy everything you need in the safety of your home through the world wide web.
Likewise, you can start and maintain a job at home.
There's no need to buy a book when you can read it digitally.

There are a few more things I can name however I'll keep it at that.

And no, I don't believe it's slowly ruining the generations and neither do I hate any of this. I just pulled together a few anti-current!technology people complain about.

  23. QUESTION:
what do you remember about video games in the 50's and the 60's and the 70's and the 80's and the 90's?
The origin of video games lies in early cathode ray tube-based missile defense systems in the late 1940s. These programs were later adapted into other simple games during the 1950s. By the late 1950s and through the 1960s, more computer games were developed (mostly on mainframe computers), gradually increasing in sophistication and complexity.[n 1] Following this period, video games diverged into different platforms: arcade, mainframe, console, personal computer and later handheld games.[1]

The first commercially viable video game was Computer Space in 1971, which laid the foundation for a new entertainment industry in the late 1970s within the United States, Japan, and Europe. The first major crash in 1977 occurred when companies were forced to sell their older obsolete systems flooding the market. Six years later a second, greater crash occurred. This crash—brought on largely by a flood of poor quality video games coming to the market—resulted in a total collapse of the console gaming industry worldwide, ultimately shifting dominance of the market from North America to Japan. While the crash killed the console gaming market, the computer gaming market was largely unaffected. Subsequent generations of console video games would continue to be dominated by Japanese corporations. Though several attempts would be made by North American and European companies, fourth generation of consoles, their ventures would ultimately fail. Not until the sixth generation of video game consoles would a non-Japanese company release a commercially successful console system. The handheld gaming market has followed a similar path with several unsuccessful attempts made by American companies all of which failed outside some limited successes in the handheld electronic games early on. Currently only Japanese companies have any major successful handheld gaming consoles, although in recent years handheld games have come to devices like cellphones and PDAs as technology continues to converge.

CPU Usage : When ever I run a game/video about 5-10 minutes in, the game/video will slow and get I FPS of 7-10?
For about 15-20 seconds the game/video will keep at this slow pace, then it will stop. About 2-3 minutes later it will start doing it again and won't stop till I end the current application I was using. The next time it did the crashing I check Windows Task Manager and the CPU Usage was at 100% which is normally around 20-40%, then I looked to see what process was causing the most CPU Usage and only 5 of the 84 processes I have running barely rose above 15. I've scanned my laptop for viruses and defragged my laptop. This has only just happened since last week and before it used to run games/videos without this problem. My laptop is also High end bought for £700, here are the specifications :

    Aspire 5520G, AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core mobile technology TL-62 (2.1GHz, 2x512 KB L2 Cache), Up to 1535MB NVIDIA GeForce 9300M G TurboCache, 4GB DDR2, 250GB HDD, Blu-ray Disc, 802.11b/gWLAN
    Vista Home Premium

I wanted to format to see if that would fix it which it most probably would but when I purchased the laptop I didnt recieve a format disc.

    Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Id say this is graphics driver issue. Another possibility is that your hard drive may need defragging. Sometimes large game files can fragment and cause a glitch when the file information is passed to your graphics card RAM

  26. QUESTION:
Resources to keep up with new (IT) technology?
Years ago I kept myself up-to-date with the latest technological advancements by reading PC World magazine. I've been out of that habit for several years now, and I was wondering what publications, blogs, or other resources other people were using to keep up with the latest technology.

My focus is primarily on PC hardware & programming, however I'm also very interested in resources covering wireless tech, networking, video gaming tech, multimedia tech, and tech laws & regulations (both in the US and internationally). Suggestions that cover any/all of these areas are greatly appreciated.

question about the ps3 and new wii like game control?
Last week i bought my boyfriend a playstation 3 for christmas (but haven't given it yet) and he was talking yesterday about a new control that will be like the wii one (so it senses movement or something) and he was very excited about it.

Is this something you can add later to normal ps3, or will it be a new version of the ps3 (in which case i really should have waited to buy it and he won't think the one i bought him is as good)

Can someone explain this really simply, because i don't know anything at all about technology or video game stuff!! I'm a bit stressed that if thats what he wants it may not be possible with the one i bought him!

    • ANSWER:
You should be fine. The "movement thing" your boyfriend is talking about is called the Playstation Move. It is an attachment for a normal PS3, like the one that you bought. Yes, you can add it later to the normal PS3. (You actually need a normal PS3 to have it) Your boyfriend will love your gift and you should give him the PS3 you bought him.

  28. QUESTION:
What accessory(ies) do I need in order to play video games on my computer monitor?
I have a 17" Lenovo computer monitor, and several game consoles (Gamecube, PS2, N64), but no way to play my video games using the monitor. All the monitor has is VGA output; it does not have S-Video output, and certainly no HDMI or DVI (hey, I got it for a bargain used).

After doing a little bit of research online, I quickly realized that I'm not up to speed on the latest terminology or technology. I have found some products which can (or are made specifically to) allow one to hook up a video game console to a computer monitor, but the reviews of the products all stated that the picture quality was less than adequate. These products also seem to be rather pricey.

I don't intend to watch TV with the monitor.

If anyone could suggest a product based on the info above, that has reasonably good quality at a reasonably good price, I would greatly appreciate it. If that product is available at a store such as Target or Best Buy, that would be even better.

    Thanks in advance!

    Ladies of current events?
Does your Husband/partner/BF spend far to much time playing video games?

An article in today's Telegraph warns women that they may see less of their partners because of the release of the latest call of duty game. I was astonished to see the queue at my local Sainsbury's on Tuesday morning when it was released.

Many people have commented that the article is sexist, and women have their own time wasting pastimes (E.G. shopping) other women have complained that they enjoy gaming as much as men.

Myself I could easily develop a habit for the Total war series, but have so far managed to keep myself in the real world.

  31. QUESTION:
How much money annually is spent on entertainment in the US?
When I say entertainment, I mean professional sports, movie theater showings, video games, music, latest gadgets/technologies, toys, television, etc. Anything that has only the purpose to entertain.
I was thinking this because the amount could possibly account for our country's massive deficit, because 50 years ago there were no video games, people didn't go to movies as often, and professional sports did not generate even close to the amount of income it does now. Plus the fact that other countries (say India or Thailand) do not invest as much money into these things as the Us does, the US has basically become a pleasure-filled country in which so much of people's salaries are going towards unneeded capital; other countries could not POSSIBLY sink as much of a percentage of annual exponential income as the US does, its simply impossible.
This is seriously a tough question, there might not be an answer for it but I thought I would ask it anyway, this really jolted my mind.

    • ANSWER:
Further, many entertainments are kept secret because the consumers do not want publicity or the entertainment venues are not legal (pit bull fights for example, use your imagination for others).

The total figure would be astronomical, certainly in the trillions.

Another cost is that the government does not collect taxes (sales of goods and services) and and also misses the tax on any profits in that case.

Finally those who have such income may or may not declare the income for income tax purposes.

What you can find going on in one place is but the tip of an iceberg.

The iceberg for all states is very, very, very large.

Only the people who have sufficient funds can engage heavily in this sector, legal or illegal.

That is why you often hear about politicians and judges on Madam's list.

There will be some good, fairly reliable figures for TVs and Toys though.

As for entertainment on TV, may be true for most, but some people mostly watch the news. They are a small fraction though.

However, there are a LOT of entertainment exports and much intellectual property.

This brings us to business accounts abroad. What do you think? Uncle Sam knows everything about them -- whose, where and for what? Nice neat records of all sales?

Pretty hard to do 10,000 miles away, eh?

And not much cooperation from foreign banks. Depends on some few whistle blowers, few and far between.

Some governments may cooperate, some of that coming up in Europe, even between there and Canada.

But think also about the possibilities when and if there is ONE government. Corruption free? What do you think?

BTW, I do not actually think much about all of this, I never liked money and finance. But even a science buff's life forces you into confronting it to some extent.

Such inklings as I represent are virtually unknown amongst the general populace.

True figures would boggle even expert minds I suspect.

The man in the street would pass out on the ground if he knew how he was bearing the burdens of tax versus the skaters, and the relative amount the skaters were avoiding.

I am informed that if all was fair and everyone was paying their share, about 10% of each persons income would go for taxes -- that is all. And there would be enough to do everything except a big war.

You are EXACTLY right about NOW versus about 1960 and earlier.

I know for sure, because I WAS THERE, 1944--1960 and all the following years to now.

  34. QUESTION:
Electronic (Technology/Video) Refereeing in Football (Soccer) and World Cup (International Justice Cause -1/2)?
Do you believe that the refereeing mistakes in the World Cup games are human lack of reflex or there can be a bunker of brokers selling previous games results ?

An average World Cup game has 2 to 6 fouls inside the area and 30 outside but the referees criteria keep the right to whistle a penalty, a card or nothing. There are several abstract ways for a referee to control the psico of the game and to influence its result.

I am from Brazil, the violence and corruption champion country. Our country hosted the 1st World Cup after the II W.War, 15 Cups ago. It was a time that Brazil had no favelas. We lost that championship but some of our politicians won intimacy with the international authorities of football and they learnt the great tool that fantasy shows can be to manipulate millions of people proud. It was when the Brazilian Bossa Nova of social cooperation started to be induced by social hypnosis. Politicians started to increase investments in stadiums and decreased investments in science, culture and entrepreneurship.

Today, it is common to listen to accusations and taped proofs of the Brazilian football refereeing national commission selling results to team managers previous to games. Now let me ask ... are there football mafias in your country too ? Keep opened eyes in the consequences of virtual social lies in people's life ...

In the 1962 Cup, Brazil won robbed against Spain and had the cancellation of Garrincha's red card in the final ... in 1966 the English refereeing conspiracy was a mark, specially against Argentina ... 16 years later Argentina and England declared the Falkland war. In 1970, the Brazilian forwarder Pele made an intentional clear aggressive poke against an Uruguayan opponent in the semi-final and was not expelled by the referee ... that game was a primitive violence show and no
refereeing punishments happened in front of millions TV viewers ... coincidently after 1970 and the violent 1966 Cup games the peacefull Brazilians started to become a violent society.

In 1970 Brazil became 3 times world champion and our politicians entered for FIFA's management. They were kept there for more than 20 years and it increased the global fantasy at over 1.000%. Today Brazil is 5 times world champion and the national public budgets are much more deviated ... now we have 50,000 KILLINGS PER YEAR (more than Irak, Israel and Colombia together), we have 30,000 car accident deaths/year, millions of prostitutes and a long list of crime gangs, foreign and domestic corruption.

How many corrupted leaders are linked to football ? How many would pay refereeing bribes ? What can the influence of referreing commissions be over society ? How many referees would accept a lot of dirty money ? Did an investigation over referees and commissioners properties ever happened ? Can't Civil Prosecutors authorities demand TOTAL TECHNOLOGY REFEREEING for football ?

How many referees reject an € 100,000 bribe ? How about € 10,000,000 per Cup game result ? ... Do you know how much is FIFA's official profit every 4 years (1466 days) ? It is a value similar to only 10 days the revenue of 15 Brazilian banks from our govern ... the excessive bankers receipt here are considered corruption by several economists (20% national budget deviation) and many of the banks are direct or indirect sponsors of football. Brazilian people have small salaries but our banks and their partner corrupted politicians have MUCH MORE money than football referees and commissioners. Recently some of our banks have been accused of paying monthly fees (mensalao) to hundreds of politicians and when the charges became heavy our press started to use an old scape method ... to occupy the news with other subjects. Guess which was the best subject ? They love football noise to bring economic truth silence.

A corruption champion country has a great stock of robbed money to use in potential football bribes ... corrupts do not invest in scientific creations, in regional art or social life, they prefer to deviate part of the money to buy artificial happiness for millions of humble voters ... and our press pretends not to see the devil behind their money, it accepts the job of selling a travested truth and help transforming beautifull people into cheap labor ... the little elite is the balls sucker of the financial pseudo-elite and they both are envy of the humble people's charm.

  35. QUESTION:
    Computer Engineering?
I am going back to school in the fall to get my degree. I am highly interested in majoring in Computer Engineering because I want to understand how computers are made, how to write programs for them, video game technology, Music Technology and get involved in the process of developing things to help societies/economies work. If I think about the future development of computers and the internet I get excited and want to be a part of that.
My doubts with going into this field is that I will be in way over my head. I am unsure if I will be able to grasp the concepts involved like physics, chemistry, & calculas (as general requirements) and then later concepts of from electronics to software to everything.
I want to have a specialized skill that somebody pays me to provide them with, I don't want to be part of the rat race to the top, where I have to fight for a middle management position pushing papers.
Please advise me with any suggestions you think will help me with my decision!

    • ANSWER:
      hi

I understand the kind of thoughts you must be getting at this point of time.

Its a big decision which will decide whether you are in or out of the rat race.

Computer science is not only about programs, electronics etc, its about logic!!!

If you think that you are a logical thinker by which i mean you second each and every thought with some supportive data based on facts and experience which we call logic , then there is no doubt that you will definitely succeed in achieving your dream.

Its your career, you will have to be with computers through out your life........so think, are you ready for it? To get the kind of learning you desire you will not only need a desire, but also dedication and commitment.

Try to think whether its your dream or a curiosity? once you ask this question to yourself and get an answer, the things will get much clearer.

Last but not the least: your decision is perfectly alright but do not go ahead until you feel confident enough to put in all the efforts required.

As far as i understand you are a deep thinker and i don't see any reason except determination which can stop you in pursuing your dream

      All the best!!!!!

If possible I am buying the other parts from Newegg so if you can find it there it would be super easy for me. 😀

    • ANSWER:
I play on 1980 x 1020 resolution which is 1080p HD quality. Not max, but close enough for me. It runs perfectly smooth on high settings, with some ultra qualities thrown in as well.

I have a Palit 9600GT Sonic 1 GIG card that I got for 60 bucks from ascendtech.com. I also have a 3.0gig AMD A2+ and 2.5 gigs of DDR2 RAM on Windows Vista.

It plays perfectly fine. For max settings which is up in the 2500 x whatever range, you will need a much better card than the one I have and spend more $$$. I play on a 21 inch widescreen and its pretty.

  38. QUESTION:
How many mb does the Intel Mobile 965 chipset have?
I bought a Dell Inspiron 1525 for my wife last year, you know, one of those fancy pink ones. She loved it. Except when it came time to play her games. It seems the Intel mobile 965 chipset has its share of issues being integrated. I'm curious, and I haven't been able to find the answer, just how powerful the chipset actually is. I see Intel claiming it is the latest video technology, blah blah blah. But yet it is unable to play simple 3d games like the Sims 2 and Guitar Hero. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
The integrated graphics processor (GMA X3100) of GM 965 chipset has no dedicated memory and just shares from system RAM. Its dynamic memory feature (Intel DVMT) allows it to share from 8Mb up to 384Mb for graphics memory.

Intel integrated graphics are pretty slow in gaming. You can just compensate by adjusting DVMT in BIOS to scale up to 384Mb (assuming you have large installed RAM, say 2Gb). Then use low game settings and low resolution, say, just up to 1024x768. Sometimes using 16bit color instead of 32bit could improve gaming performance when GPU is pretty weak.

    HELP ending to my speech!?
~i need help for creating a conclusion to my speech can someone help me write an ending?~ also tell me what you think because i suck at speech class.

Do you play video games? Video games and time on the computer can be a fun way to spend your free time and communicating with others, however spending too much time focusing on today’s technology, and not focusing on other things, can leave you with signs of addiction, poor sleeping and eating habits, as well as forgetting what’s really important.

Many of you, if not all of you probably know, and have heard of the negative affects of video games and technology in the past, but today I am going to remind you of the negative affects technology can have, and some tips on how you can cut down on the addiction. Since we are teenagers I am more so going to focus on our age group.

What is video game addiction? Video game addiction, or more broadly video game overuse, is excessive or compulsive use of computer and video games that interferes with daily life. 97% of all teenagers play video games, ranging from handhelds, to consoles that hook up to the television, to games on the computer, however only about 8 to 10% of teenagers are addicted to video games. 8 to 10 percent may not seem like a lot, but there being around 25million teenagers in the united states means that 2 to 2.5million teenagers are addicted in the country, which is 1 in 10. That is a hefty amount of teenagers who are still addicted to video games.

I will not be listing some of the warning signs, and actions addicts fall through with. Someone who has a video game addiction may only intend to spend 30 minutes to an hour on a game but may end up extending their playtime to several hours before getting off, and by then they have already lost and wasted time to do things that they should have done. Another example of video game addiction is staying up later then you should just to extend your gameplay, such as one should probably go to bed at 11:30 but stays up past 2:00am.

Homework may go unfinished and people may drift away from family and friends just to spend more time in the cyber world. In some cases the teen who is addicted may skip personal hygiene like taking a shower over video games. A video game addict’s grades in school usually start to decrease because their homework goes unfinished, and their poor sleeping and eating habits cause them to sleep and not pay attention in class. Most addicts live in denial at the fact they are addicted when questioned about it.

Lack of exercise is another negative that comes with addiction to videogames. It is healthy for everyone to get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day.

There are many tips on how to control and avoid addiction. Remind yourself what’s more important, the game you are playing or your future? Identifying and reminding yourself of the negative aspects of addiction will help you lay off and focus on the things that truly matter.

If you start blaming others for problems that you have caused yourself from addiction then it’s time to take responsibility and take the first step towards getting yourself out of the rut your in. If you are playing over 24 hours a week on video games this could start becoming a problem, try limiting yourself on gaming time to 2 hours per day, that should help you still have time for tasks that need to be completed or things that you can do to help yourself and actually start getting ahead, you will start feeling better about yourself instead of stressed out.

Sometimes addiction may be hard to overcome, this is where someone else may need to get involved. They will have to remind you, or put a strict timing on your game time, as well as hide your games and things like that so that your game time will be limited.

    • ANSWER:
Video game addiction is a growing problem in teens that needs to be addressed. Raising awareness can help us fight existing cases of addiction and prevent new ones from forming. If we can help to curb video game addiction we can improve the lives of millions of teens throughout the nation and even the world. As our technology improves and begins to drastically change our lives, it is important that we also improve our understanding of and relationship with it, to ensure a better future for our youths.

      Or something along those lines.

  40. QUESTION:
Why do some people think there wasn't modern technology in the 90's?
I was a kid in the 90's (and a little kid in the 80's). I've grown up completely surrounded by electronics. So I don't understand why some people think that there wasn't modern technology in the 90's. I've been going on computers since I was like 8 years old.

I first started going on the internet when I was 16, around 1994.

I played video games all the time, and in the mid-90's, there were games with 3d graphics like Nintendo 64, PlayStation, etc. I think even the X-Box first came out sometime in the mid or late 90's. The first 3d game system, called Neo Geo came out in the early 90s when I was about 13.

Google started around 1997 or 1998. And I think eBay has been around since 1996.

Computers had 3d accelerated video cards by the late 90's. One of my friends had a computer with 1 GB of RAM in 1999. Broadband (DSL) internet service first came out in the late 90's and I knew a few people who had it around 1999.

Some people (especially kids) think that they're the first ones who have ever downloaded music. But I started downloading music and even movies around 1998 or 1999. Does everyone remember Napster?

So I don't get it. Why do people (especially kids) act as if all this stuff is new and they're the first ones to ever use the internet, download music, etc. I've been doing all this for over 10 years. I was going in chat rooms when I was only 16. Personal computers have been around for over 20 years, and the internet has been around for over 15 years.

So I don't get it. There were computers, the internet was around, we had 3d video games, we were downloading music, etc etc...so why do some people still think there wasn't modern technology in the 90's.

I talked to one girl who actually thought the internet wasn't around in the 90's!

What do you think it is? Selective memory? All the bogus advertisement and fads that make some people think that none of this stuff was around? Maybe to brainwash people into thinking that they're buying or using something new that's been around forever? People who really believe the internet didn't exist before MySpace?

    • ANSWER:
I think you answered your own question. The reason people, especially the younger generation, think this is because most of the things you mentioned were emerging technologies in the 90's. You yourself mentioned that you had exposure to computers at a fairly early age, and that you had quite a bit of exposure. It sounds like you and I are close to the same generation, and I remember going over to people's houses to fix their computers while in my tweens and early teens. At this time most people were still just using computers as word processors. I was one of the first kids to have the internet thanks to Prodigy in the very early 90's, and really all we could do was check the weather and get a few very basic html sites.

The companies you mentioned; Google, Ebay, Amazon, started in the late 90's, but the mainstream really didn't start to understand the worth of the internet until the turn of the millennium. As the internet became more useful, technology started to become more than just a thing for geeks and gamers, it became vital to the regular masses as well.

So I think the real answer is that while we might have grown up with it, most people didn't until the 2000's. For them, all of this stuff was new and unknown, while for us it was just steady improvement on what we'd already been using.

The same could be true for a computer engineer in the 80's and 70's. The internet really started in the 60's with the military. To us, the 90's was the start of modern technology. To the engineer developing the internet, the 60's would be the start.

  41. QUESTION:
Why make video games based off the Bible when most of the time they suck?
In 1982, John and Phil Conrod made the first Christian video game. It was called the Bible Computers and was released for the TRS-80 Color Computer and then a lot of other consoles including the VIC-20 and MS-DOS. Pretty soon, other Christian video games followed in that same decade. Companies decided to capitalise on the genre and make money, probably converting to Christianity in the process.

The most infamous array of Christian video games came out in the 90s. A video game company called Colour Dreams was making unlicensed video games for the NES. These games included Raid 2020, Captain Comic and, most notably, Menace Beach. Nintendo included a 10NES chip in the NES console, which meant that only NES games published, developed or licensed by Nintendo could work and unlicensed games wouldn't. But Colour Dreams found a way to bypass it. They used technology licensed from the company Tengen which used a voltage zap to get past the NES' security mechanism. For unknown reasons, Colour Dreams changed it's name to Wisdom Tree and started making Christian games for the NES, using the same method to bypass the 10NES chip. They basically recycled their previous games and added Christian themes to them. For instance, Menace Beach was changed to Sunday Funday in 1995, and Crystal Mines was changed Exodus: Journey to the Promised Land, which was later recycled into a similar game called Joshua. All the Bible-based games sucked, but the method of bypassing the 10NES chip was impressive I have to admit.

When the Nintendo was working on the SNES, they must have figured out how unlicensed games managed to get through. So they built a new lockout chip to keep them out, and only one ever got through. That was Super 3D Noah's Ark, which, as it happens, is basically a clone of Wolfenstein 3D. The graphics were changed but the game was still a massive failure.

There are still Christian games being made and I'm sure most of them have a bad reception, most notably Left Behind: Eternal Forces. It caused controversy when themes of religous intolerance and bigotry were brought to light. Even Jack Thompson himself cut his ties with one of his friends who made the game. No violence in the game was rewarded and you mostly had to do it only in desperation, but it was still remembered as the most infamous Christian game ever.

Aside from that why make games based on the Bible? Most of them, if not all of them, would suck.

    • ANSWER:
Even though they may suck (and they do, my parents used to buy them for me), people make Bible video games because there is a market there for them. Christian parents will buy their children games based off of the Bible because that exposes the children to Bible themes in their entertainment.

The parents are going to look at all the games out there which seem to disagree with their beliefs, and they'll see those few Christian games as an oasis of virtue in an industry otherwise centered around violence and sin.

    • ANSWER:
From the information you've plagerised here, the only difference that can be determined is that the first one is Overclocked...which means it wins, since everything else is identical.

That being said...the 8600 was the "poor-man's" 8 series card (we won't mention the 8400), and it was simply tweaked and rebranded as the 9600.

I can't and won't call any nVidia 9 series card "good" (they all tend to be buggy in one form or the other, and the drivers were quirky for the longest time, and may have not [yet] been fixed!)...however, for the price, it is decent. (Incidentally, Dx10 support on the 8 series and 200 series [except the 250 - which is another story!!!] is better than for the 9 series!)

If you mobo is Intel, ATi or generic, I'd recommend an HD4 series (the 4850 has better performance than the 9600). If it has an nForce or GeForce (nVidia) chipset, you're essentially stuck with nVidia cards.

      Good Luck!

  43. QUESTION:
What do I get him for Christmas?
What do I get for my Dad? =(

Technology is out...He always buys himself his own toys, video games, DVDs, etc...all the latest gaming stuff, comics. He's a loveable nerd. I just don't know what to do. I usually get food or something, like birthday cake but I can't do that for Christmas lol.

    Guys, what do you like??

    • ANSWER:
It sounds like a gift card from Best Buy would suit him. I know it's not as fun to give but he'll appreciate something that can get him what he wants.

To make it more personal make a homemade recipe of some yummy holiday treats. I like to make buckeye balls. You can browse recipes online.

Maybe consider a watch? Try going shopping on black friday (day after Thanksgiving). They have so many sales, you might just see something that stands out that would suit him perfectly

  44. QUESTION:
Have you ever experienced any strange phenomena with technology?
Technology glitches all the time - video games screw up, radios make strange frequency noises and tv's can pick up random images. Most of this can obviously be explained as a technical glitch.

But what I want to know is: Have YOU ever experienced something perplexing or strange to do with technology?

I haven't really experienced anything special... But here's what they are

2005ish I was watching TV with my brother (it was an episode of border control or something...) and just as the ad faded to go into the show the tv started to stutter and froze on an image of what I recall to be a moving train. A voice over said - in an american southern accent "Jesus Christ, help us all lord." And it repeated itself over, and over and over again. We left the TV on for 10 minutes and all it did was repeat. It wasn't just on That TV, because the other TV was on the same station. I can't remember if ever station was like that or just the channel I was watching, but I wasn't scared at the time. But when I heard that news report a day later, it creeped me out.

The next day we saw a news report on the event and they said (I can't remember exactly) something along the lines of a fishing ship was sinking, and that "Jesus Christ, help us all lord" was the emergency message of one of the crewmates. The satellites picked up that signal and posted it on the channel.

It's not very good. - Hey another I heard happened to a friend of mine - he and my other mate were playing some shooting game (don't know which) when a random creature (that isn't a part of the game) started attacking them. It was incredibly fast and indestructible. They reset the game after it kept killing them, then it didn't come back.

If you've heard or experienced anything even slightly similar to these - please share your story.

  45. QUESTION:
Is It Time to Declare the PS3 a Disaster?
The latest NPD numbers are out for the month of May (they track console sales, and video game sales), and it's more dismal news for the PS3.

In the month of May a dismal 81,000 PS3s were sold. The Xbox 360 sold more than double that, and the Wii sold a ridiculous 338,000.

This has been the same pattern with each month of 2007. The PS3 is WAY behind in sales each month. They are a DISTANT 3rd place.

Why are they not selling....too expensive (people dont care how packed with technology it is...it's a GAME CONSOLE), and there are absolutely no games for it to even begin to justify spending that much money.

At what point do we declare the PS3 a disaster? Sony has to be scared to death.
Weeder...the xbox 360 allows you to stream video, music and pictures from your pc to your 360. Sounds like what you are talking about. However, I did not think the PS3 could do that?

Also, to say the 360 is just a game console and nothing else is not true....

    - streaming of videos, music and photos from pc to 360 (saving a TON of space on your 360 hard drive)

    - dowload tons of movies and tv shows (many in hi-def) form the Marketplace

    - They will soon be rolling out "tivo" capabilities for the 360

    - xbox live is without a doubt, by far, the superior live service

-HD-DVDs play, look and sound FANTASTIC using the 360.

360 is multi-talented, but, still at it's heart, it is a game console, which is the #1 people want when buying a GAME CONSOLE. Something Sony kinda forgot.

    • ANSWER:
Its also losing its exclusives to the 360 all the time, apparently even metal gear 4 is now likely to appear on the 360, they said the console would last ten years but just look how its fairing against the current competition, just how is the PS3 going to compete with the successors of the wii and 360 which are likely to be released in between 5 to 6 years time, the PS3 is a failing console no matter how much those that wasted their money on the system try to talk it up, the reality of it shows its a disaster.

  47. QUESTION:
Anybody wanna Critique my Essay about Generation Z?
My English teacher wanted us to write an essay about generation and characteristics that describe it.

To me, my Generation would be described as "The Lazy Generation". My generation undoubtedly would be described as a lazy mainly due to all the technology advances we have had. Another characteristic to describe my generation is being filled with followers and being a very gullible group. Our next feature would be being similar to "The Lost Generation". These characteristics precisely describes what "The Lazy Generation" is to me.

My generation is always referred to as a technology filled generation. With so much technology we have, things have become much easier for us to do. Everything you can imagine is just one click away for us. Technology has helped us make everything much more accessible and just simpler. Though technology has helped us in lots of ways it has always made us very lazy. For example, back in the day kids used to play outside all day because there was just nothing else to do. Now instead of going outside to play, kids can stay inside and play basketball or do play anything they want on a Xbox (video-game console). Adults just think we are just lazy on our own, even though its other adults who makes these games for us to make a profit. Each year they come out with more and more options, now you can get a good workout on your own Wii (video game console) instead of going out to exercise. Another way we have become more lazy is by the way we communicate. Instead of maybe going to a friend's house to play some video game or just go to hangout and talk, we can just go online and BAM we already together talking or playing. Due to all the technology advance we have had,, it has made my generation as a whole lazier.

Technology as not only affected our physical condition but has also affected us mentally. You can almost call the media's affect on us as brainwashing. Most of us want and want to do everything we see on television. MTV to me is the biggest culprit, MTV has brain washed a lot of kids and teenagers into believing life is one huge party and it's all about being popular. Therefore, many kids just follow and buy certain clothes and listen to certain music just to fit in with "the crowd". This generation also has way more followers compared to others. Since we all are so unsecured we find a very strong feeling to follow "the crowd" whether its buying the latest gadget or listening to the latest Lil Wayne song. It's funny that they call us the country of the free, even though our education system and media brainwash us into thinking one way and not leaving room for any creativity.

Generation Z has been compared to "The Lost Generation" many times before. "The Lost Generation" grew up in a Post-war world and a down falling economy. My generation is growing up in a Post 9/11 world and also with a failing economy. Many in the Post-War generation grew up lost and confused about their lives. Many kids in my generation are also lost and just like floating around and being brainwashed by the media. Our country is going through a very rough patch due to the War in Middle East, terrorism, falling economy and just evil taking over everything. We are growing up in some time tough times that have been seen like this since the "The Lost Generation"

"The Lazy Generation" is a very "interesting" group but has been molded by our own society. Technology has made everything much easier than it had been, therefore making us becoming lazier due to everything being only a click away. Next, this generation is mostly have been brainwashed into following what society we should follow and not letting creativity enter our minds. Lastly, this generation is similar to "The Lost Generation" in many ways by both growing up very hard times. If Generation Z does not wake up and try to change its ways, this generation will become the next "Lost Generation"

    • ANSWER:
They are attempting to brainwash us. THEY feel that if were all creative and original we'll all get together and overrun the government.
Except I like Lil Wayne. He doesn't seem to care about anyone/thing.
In MY opinion it has to do with whether you jump on bandwagons.
I liked Lil Wayne before Young Money which is when A LOT of people started loving him. THOSE people only like him when he has a new "Hit" single out but when its not on the radio anymore they stop.
      I dont.
      Ive ALWAYS liked him.
The only bandwagon Ive jumped on is with Trey Songz. But I dont count that because usually bandwagon jumpers know NOTHING about a singer just the songs they have on the radio. I know more then I should know.

  48. QUESTION:
Does anyone have a X1300 Pro with 256MB DDR video memory. If so, how does it perform with today's games?
At Sams Club they have a deal on a HP Media Center PC for 88.74. It includes a wireless keyboard, wireless optical mouse, Dual Core processor (3.2GHz with Viiv), 2 GB of PC2-4200 SDRAM, 300 GB Serial ATA hard drive, DVD SuperMulti Drive with LightScribe Technology, A DVD Rom Drive, High Def. Audio, and a whole bunch of other stuff. (Visit Samsclub.com for more info). The graphics card is a ATI RADEON X1300 Pro with up to 256MB DDR video memory. Now, I'm a gamer, and need to know how this card performs with todays latest games (Namely Doom 3 or Starship Troopers, something that requires vertex hardware and pixel shaders). Any info will be greatly apperciated.
My basic concern is will it be able to play the games with full graphics accelaration at a 1024x768 display.

    • ANSWER:
Probably OKAY with those games. But just okay. You won't be able to run them at maximum settings, at least not Doom 3. It's not a card I would get for a serious gamer. It's a budget card and in my opinion performs horribly. Also, you could build a much more powerful system for about 0 less than what they want for that HP but if you aren't up to the task of building your own system then as soon as you get it, you'll have to dump the graphics card it came with and get something in the area of a nVidia Geforce 7600GS or 7600GT, for the time being I do not like ATi's offerings in the mid-range graphics card. Those cards range from 0~5 respectively so consider adding that in AS SOON as you get that computer.

To answer your second question, probably. But keep in mind, it will be limited should you want to play newer games. I stand by my original statement that you should probably trash it as soon as you get the computer. However, you should check out a review of the card over here, http://www.techtree.com/techtree/jsp/article.jsp?article_id=72820&cat_id=537&page=1 and they express many of the same concerns that I do. It's basically up to you, it's on the line of being "good enough" for now but not "good enough" for the future.
